DENVER, Aug. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – VertiFresh, LLC (“VertiFresh”) is pleased to announce that starting today, Denver-based MAD Greens Inspired Eats (“MAD Greens”) will begin offering its signature “Alferd Packer” summertime salad made with all locally grown ingredients – including VertiFresh hydroponic lettuce. MAD Greens’ customers will be among the first in Denver to sample the company’s premium quality lettuce, grown using the patent pending PharmPlex(tm) hydroponic cultivation system produced by FusionPharm, Inc. (OTC: FSPM), also based in Denver. For more information on FusionPharm Inc. go to www.fusionpharminc.com.

“Together MAD Greens and VertiFresh are doing our part to make a positive impact on Denver’s environment and economy,” said William Sears, founder of VertiFresh. “We know customers are committed to products that are good for them and good for the environment, and as two local companies, all our food dollars stay in the community.”  “All of the lettuce Mad Greens customers will be enjoying in the Alferd Packer Salad will be picked fresh and delivered to Mad Greens within 24 hours, ensuring the freshest snd most nutritious product possible,” added Sears.

Hydroponics (method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil) as a commercial plant growing technique has been in use for many years. VertiFresh is taking this concept to a new level in making urban farming a reality in Denver. Using the patent pending Pharmplex indoor cultivation system, which utilizes repurposed steel shipping containers to cultivate plants indoors, the company can grow premium quality produce literally minutes away from local restaurants and markets. Urban farming eliminates long distance, refrigerated food transportation which robs produce of vital nutrients and involves burning large amounts of fossil fuels. Urban farming using hydroponics also uses less than 10% of the water required for similar-sized traditional farming.

Denver salad chain MAD Greens added a locally grown salad to the menu this summer, and while the limited-time Alferd Packer will be gone after Sept. 30, lettuce used to make it will be available year-round. This week, the company got its first produce order from Vertifresh, a local startup that uses hydroponic technology to grow lettuce and other greens in retrofitted shipping crates in a warehouse in an industrial part of the city.
